![]() ![]() ![]() It probably won’t surprise you to learn that the first half is the one I prefer. The first half is pretty solid Hard SF, while the second is firmly in the horror tradition. The Last Astronaut handles this disparity in approach by splitting itself pretty evenly down the middle. When the genres mix, you end up with a war between the need for answers and the knowledge that those answers can’t match our own imaginings. It’s not necessarily more dangerous, but the fear levels are heightened. being stalked through the darkness by an unknown monster is far scarier than fighting a man with a knife. Horror is a genre that falls apart when we get the answer. Almost all fears are rooted in the fear of the unknown. When something goes wrong, it is picked apart in terms we understand, and the situation is either resolved or abandoned in a logical fashion. Hard SF is rooted in our present understanding of science, so it’s a genre where we expect hard and fast answers. Here at least, these two genres don’t sit together very well. The first is Hard SF, and the second is Horror. ![]() The Last Astronaut is an odd mix of two quite different genres. But when a mysterious object approaches the Earth, it is Jansen who must lead the mission to make contact. When a mission went wrong and astronauts died, it was Jansen who shouldered the blame. ![]()

![]() ![]() Isn’t that the key to happiness? Life tangles and snarls and trips you up, but if you make the stumble and missteps part of the dance, things seem to work out in the end. To use a quote from “ Scent of a Woman,” “if you get tangled up, tango on”. ![]() ![]() It does not matter that I don’t always know the choreography or the right moves. ![]() None of this matters when the music takes me away – whether in a dance or Zumba class, or swinging to some big band tunes, or shaking it up at a concert. I do not have a dancer’s body – and I know that I’m not graceful or terribly coordinated. I love the feel of my body in motion, losing myself in music and movement. I jokingly call it my happy dance, but really, every kind of dance makes me smile. The book is 1080 pages long and never gets to a point where I was bored. It quickly became a book in my top 5 of all time and is seriously contending with the top spot, currently held by 1Q84. I finished the book about a week ago and, my God, was it amazing. Zumba is one of the activities I employ to return to a healthier, more fit body. Did you like 11/22/63 Avoid the Hulu show like the plague. I think dance is among the most powerful antidepressants available. The first is “love is a uniquely portable magic”. Finished listening to an Audible audiobook of Stephen King‘s “ 11-22-63” yesterday and I confess the two quotes from the novel that continue to haunt me are not the kind of words for which the master of horror is known. ![]() ![]() I think the Preface to the work is a really excellent piece of writing, and is a contribution by Leon Krier, himself a personal adviser on the topic of architecture and urban planning to a most famous modern critic of modern architecture, The Prince of Wales. ![]() I thought it would be worth taking the time to share some of my impressions here. Having read through the work I feel it has some excellent points to make and, at the same time raises certain questions in my mind concerning some of the fundamental assumptions that underlie the work. The description of the contents convinced me it was worth a read so I added it to my library. ![]() ![]() In some recent reading, I came across a reference to a book by noted architectural designer Marianne Cusato, entitled Get Your House Right: Architectural Details to Use and Avoid. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She doesn’t like the man or anything he stands for, though that doesn’t stop her heart from pattering like rain against glass when he’s near, nor the shiver that ghosts down her spine at the sound of his voice. Theoretically, you should be trying to figure out who is the murderer based on these discussions of art philosophy. There’s more to the plot line than just this, but the main crux of the novel is how the main character, Black, investigates by speaking to the suspects regarding their views on various aspects of art, while at the same time the unidentified murderer discusses his thoughts as well. ![]() Among them, there has been a murder of one of the miniaturists. The idea is that they are working on book of illustrations that reflects a style that is considered to be sacrilegious in that it is considered idolatry, detracting from the glorification of God, etc. The book itself was originally written in Turkish. It’s a story about a murder among a group of miniaturists (which are basically artists), and it is set in the Ottoman Empire. My Name is Red reads like a philosophical mystery, except it’s only about art philosophy.
